Improving Performance for Those With ADHD

Welcome!

Hello all and welcome to the new TheADDEdge.com blog.  Okay, so my daughter just had a ball helping me set up this blog, theme and all.  You will have to let me know what you think.

You know, it is certainly a reality check when you realize you are asking your child to help you set up stuff on computers.  I consider myself to be fairly computer literate, but for some reason this blog thing was totally stressing me out.

Oh well, we might as well use teenagers where we can when they’re willing, right?

So, this is a great place to post thoughts, comments and experiences about ADHD, life with those with ADHD, and everything in between.

Speaking of, I thought I would share with you how my youngest daughter, a beautiful 9 year old who epitomizes ADHD, spent much of her weekend.

She put her hyperfocusing skills into high gear and set up shop in our driveway, selling whatever food she could get me to give up.  Now, she didn’t do this alone, she got the neighbors to help.  I’m not sure who started it, but I’ve got to give them credit!

The first day they made eight dollars!  Now, you might wonder what 3 nine and ten year olds sold to make 8 dollars in a day.  Here’s the kicker.

They sold water!  No joke.  Water!  They took paper cups, put two ice cubes in each one (we’re in a VERY hot climate), filled them up with bottled water and sold them for a dollar.  Do you believe that?!

So, there’s my great ADHD story of the weekend.  How my 9 year old daughter and her friends made $30 in 2 1/2 days standing at the end of my driveway selling water and some crackers!  Oh, the inventiveness of kids!

Have a great night.

  2. Hi,

This site is great, it feels at home with all the information you give about your kids its as if we are there living it with you.

I have a question, my daughter cuts her skin when things don’t go her way, e.g she goes to boxing class after school.
One day after boxing she decided to hang out with some friends without informing me, I took her phone away from her for a few days and because of that she cut her skin, her doctor is saying, when she wants to let out what she feels inside she can’t find another way so she cuts herself, the doc recommends that I buy her a boxing bag for home and I get her involve in the gym or another sports along with the boxing.

    What is your suggestion?

  3. Raquel,

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate them.

Your comments do weigh heavy for me. The first thing I want to commend you on is that you are talking with her doctor. I am SO happy about that. I think it is very important to keep him/her involved in what is going on with your daughter.

Aside from that, I wonder if she might be interested in the martial arts. It is a fantastic discipline, and if you find a good teacher and school, they can lend the structure, acceptance and rules your daughter is looking for. Have you talked with her about this? I think the boxing bag can be a good idea, but I would really look into the martial arts as well.

I also wonder, does she see a counselor at all? My understanding is a lot of times kids who cut themselves do so to not only get out their emotions, but also to just feel alive. Once they cut off their feelings, it can get to a point where they don’t feel alive at all, and cutting can help that.

I am certainly not an expert on cutting, and again, I am very relieved that you have her doctor involved. But I am certainly here for you and would love try to be of any help.

  4. Thank you Tracy, I will look into the martial arts.
Her doctor said the same thing that you have said about the cutting and she suggested that Summer gets into an activity like Martial arts to use up her energy.

  5. Hello Tracy,

I wrote you a while back about my daughter cutting her hands.

I am posting this message for the award that you are offering.
I would really like to get this two months award because simply put I cannot afford your Tutoring club, your currency is quite high for me to purchase. I read what you said you are offering in the club for both parents and children and I honestly would like to have fewer arguements with my daughter and see her grades improve and having her school teachers call me less.

When I read what you said about your club and what you are offering at the bottom of my heart I wish I could afford it, at present I am making a satified to send her to the doctor.
I know from reading your offer that her grades will improve if I join.
For the last few months reading your emails I have gain a trust in you a confident in you, I listen to you, and I take your advice. Before I found you I looked every where for answers and when I read your emails I know you are the one with the answers.

To me you are the only one out in this world with the answers for a person with ADD, and I now know why, you live with it each day.

I hope I will win this for my daughter because she really needs the help, thanking you in advance.

    Raquel
